EAL Programmes in association with the Bell Foundation
The Harris Institute of Teaching is an accredited partner with the Bell Foundation. Our expert licensed Bell Foundation Practitioners, who are all school based, deliver a range of Bell Foundation programmes to support Teachers and Leaders in both primary and secondary school to develop a strong provision for EAL children in schools.

We currently deliver the following programmes:
Leading EAL in your School – Primary and Secondary Schools
Leading EAL in your School – Primary and Secondary Schools
- Note separate sessions are run for primary and secondary practitioners
This course is for practitioners who are tasked with leading the EAL provision in their school, in a role such as ‘EAL coordinator’ or ‘EAL lead’. It is a highly practical course with participants expected to consider EAL provision in their own school. In the session, participants will have the opportunity to:
- Explore roles and responsibilities in leading EAL;
- Understand EAL provision in your school, including key procedures:
- An EAL policy on Admissions and inclusions;
- Assessment, target-setting and tracking
- Explore the integration of EAL across the school, including:
- Collaborating with colleagues;
- Families and the wider community;
- Develop a culture of inclusion and equity;
- Teaching and Learning.
Pre and post session tasks will be provided to support EAL development in your school.

Comprehensible English for New Arrivals using EAL
- Note separate sessions are run for primary and secondary practitioners
This session for KS1/KS2/Secondary school staff aims to raise awareness of what is and what is not comprehensible, accessible English Language for learners who use EAL, particularly those who are New to English or in the Early Acquisition stages. The session considers what makes English difficult to understand and introduces a range of easy-to-use strategies for giving instructions and checking understanding which can be used both in and out of the classroom.
In this session participants will have the opportunity to:
- understand what is and isn’t comprehensible, accessible English for EAL learners, particularly those new to English or in early acquisition stages.
- learn about the specific aspects of English that make it difficult for EAL learners to understand.
- gain easy-to-use strategies for giving clear instructions and checking understanding, applicable both in and out of the classroom.
- enhance your ability to support EAL learners effectively across different educational stages (KS1/KS2/Secondary).
- improve your skills in creating a more inclusive learning environment for EAL learners.

Adaptive Teaching for Learners Using EAL
Note separate sessions are run for primary and secondary practitioners
This session provides guidance on how to adapt teaching in a responsive way to meet the language development needs of pupils who use EAL alongside curriculum learning. The session introduces a range of easy-to-use strategies that can be implemented immediately into teaching and learning without lowering expectations of the pupils.
In this session participants will have the opportunity to:
- Learn how to adapt your teaching methods to address the language development needs of EAL pupils while delivering curriculum content.
- Gain access to easy-to-use strategies that can be implemented immediately in your classroom.
- Discover techniques to support EAL learners without compromising on academic expectations.
- Improve your ability to deliver inclusive, effective teaching that meets both language and curriculum goals.
- Equip yourself with tools that can make an immediate difference in your teaching practice.

Leading Whole School EAL Strategy
This session is for school leaders who are seeking innovative ways to drive evidence informed, impactful interventions for learners who use EAL. The session signposts school-wide systems, resources and training that will actively promote improved educational outcomes for EAL learners.
