Welcome to the Chafford Hundred, South Essex Teaching School Hub

The Chafford Hundred, South Essex Teaching School Hub

One of the first six Teaching School Hubs designated by the DfE in January 2020 and was previously a successful Teaching School. We are leading the way in teacher and leader development!

Our Region – East of England, EE5

We are responsible for all schools in South Essex, in the following 7 Local Authority Districts:
Basildon, Brentwood, CastleMAP Point, Maldon, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock. The Teaching School Hub Senior Director attends Headteacher Meetings in the Mid and South Essex Quadrants, Thurrock and Southend. Data taken Area Based Education Partnerships indicates almost all secondaries across this region are Academies ranging from 92.3 in Thurrock to 100% in Southend. Primary school academisation ranges from 50.8% in Essex to 100% in Thurrock. The number of pupils eligible for FSM ranges from 18.8% in Essex to 22.8% in Southend.

We are actively involved in recruiting teachers to this region and host training in a wide range of placement schools.

All our Local Authority Districts engage with the Teaching School Hub. We support 22/29 Hub schools with 40% or more FSM and 17/24 schools rated RI or Special Measures. 100% of school leaders responding to our annual survey are satisfied and believe that the training delivered by the Hub is of high-quality.

We are closely linked to the Royal Opera House, whose second home and Backstage Centre is in Thurrock. We support a number of their programmes including Thurrock Trailblazer, the Create and Sing Series, Cultural Champions, and Creative Writing Through the Arts. We are seeing great investment in local areas from Arts Council England who has recognised Basildon as a Priority Place for Culture, and, along with Castle Point and Thurrock, these districts are also in receipt of funding as Levelling Up for Culture Places to increase engagement and participation.

Our Hub is based at our lead school, Harris Academy Chafford Hundred in Thurrock. Harris Academy Chafford Hundred is an Ofsted outstanding “School for the Future” for 11 – 19-year olds, where students excel, exceed and explore. It is a United Nations Rights Respecting School. There is also a specialist resource base for speech, language and communication needs and autism. Chafford Hundred Conference Centre

The Chafford Hundred Conference Centre is a multi-use space that can accommodate large groups for meetings or events. It is situated on Mayflower Road, on the walkway towards the Academy with its own accessible entrance, helpful when registering delegates. It boasts ceiling to floor windows with lots of natural light and break out space if needed. Being situated on the same campus as our amazing primary and secondary academies means that school life and pupils’ artwork is very much reflected in our design. As visitors arrive, they are reminded that “Success is a Journey, Not a Destination” inviting them back for future encounters. The conference centre is in use throughout the year, hosting training for all our programmes delivered by the Teaching School Hub, Harris Institute, and National Institute of Teaching. Lettings are managed by our onsite administration team. We can provide technical support, photocopying, catering, and site services upon request. Seating arrangements can be adjusted to meet the requirements of the event. We also provide WiFi and recording technology to host hybrid events: online and face-to-face. Our customers include long-term partners like Thurrock Local Authority and our Curriculum Hubs whose delegates report positive feedback on the welcoming environment, warm staff, and easy access to nearby transport links via Chafford Hundred Train Station or the A13.
